In 2006 Professor Henle, Technical University of Dresden, announced the discovery of the presence of large quantities of methylglyoxal in Manuka honey. This knowledge advanced the scientific credibility of Manuka honey.

In 2014, New Zealand’s Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) has acknowledged methylglyoxal as being an allowable statement in the labeling of Manuka honey.
