MGO Manuka Honey
MGO Manuka Honey
What is Manuka Honey?
Manuka honey is rare – it is only made in New Zealand, and can only be made for a few weeks a year when the Manuka plant is in flower.
It is made from the nectar of the native Manuka plant (Leptospermum scoparium), which our clever bees collect and transform into Manuka honey, highly valued for its rare and complex properties. It is the nectar of the New Zealand Manuka flower that contributes the unique natural ingredients to Manuka honey that make it so different to other honeys.
MGO and UMF
MGO stands for methylglyoxal, the naturally occurring compound that makes Manuka honey so special.
Not all Manuka honey is created equal and MGO levels can vary greatly. Every jar of Manuka Health MGO Manuka Honey is tested and certified for natural MGO content and the MGO in your Manuka honey is directly related to its potency
Both MGO and UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) are trusted Manuka honey grading systems, and both measure MGO (methylglyoxal) content. Testing for MGO levels is important as they can vary greatly – not all Manuka honey is equal.
What makes it different from the regular table honey?
Manuka honey contains MGO, which requires special care and expertise to optimise and protect its special natural properties. It has been demonstrated to be the naturally occurring compound that makes Manuka honey so special. MGO is formed in the honey from Manuka nectar, and as the honey ripens, the MGO content can increase.
This requires expert handling and storage, and precise testing of the honey is essential to certify potency, quality and purity. Stringent regulations must be met at all stages of this process.
How to enjoy your Manuka Honey?
We recommend taking it straight from the spoon to absorb the maximum benefits of the Manuka honey. But it can also be enjoyed in different ways which makes it a staple household item among many families.
