Manuka honey comes from the Manuka bush which grows wild in the pristine, remote areas of New Zealand. In response to the challenges of isolation, the Manuka bush came to produce compounds with antibacterial, antifungal and antibiotic properties that enhanced the health of the birds and insects who fed on its nectar and flowers. These pollinators thrived and in return the Manuka bush flourished. The health giving properties of Manuka honey were first noticed by New Zealand dairy farmers in the 1930’s who fed Manuka honey to cows. These cows never became ill.
